Do I need an ultrasound before an abortion?
Getting an ultrasound before an abortion is recommended because first you will need to determine the gestational age of your pregnancy and confirm if it is viable. An ultrasound can also determine if your body is preparing for a miscarriage. 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage.
What tests are done before an abortion?
You should have a pregnancy test, ultrasound exam, and STI/STD testing and treatment (if needed).
What happens during an abortion?
This depends on the type of abortion you get. If you get a chemical abortion, you will be taking two different medications. One pill stops the pregnancy, and the other pill expels the pregnancy tissue from your body.
For a surgical abortion, a suction device is used to remove the embryo from the uterus through the vagina. This procedure is performed at an abortion clinic and you are sent home the same day. If complications arise, you may need emergency care.

Is abortion legal in Texas?
Effective August 24, 2022, abortion became illegal in Texas. However, exceptions can be made for medical emergencies. Your doctor must provide a written document that certifies if an abortion is necessary to save your life. You are also required to receive an ultrasound beforehand.
