Abortion Pill: What to Expect

If you are considering taking the abortion pill, we want to help answer any questions you may have. Experiencing an unplanned pregnancy can be scary, confusing, and oftentimes can feel debilitating. That’s why we, at Mid Cities Women’s Clinic, exist. We want to make sure you have all the medical information, and compassionate care you need.

What is the abortion pill?

The abortion pill, or RU 486, is a medical abortion. The abortion pill is a multistep process consisting of two drugs – Mifepristone and Misoprostol (also known as Mifeprex and Cyotec). You should only obtain the abortion pill from a licensed doctor. If you find it anywhere else either online or in another country, it may not be what you think it is or it can contain additional drugs which can lead to more harm and damage to your body.

Do I take the pills at the same time?

This multi-step process when taking the abortion pills starts with taking the Mifepristone pill set first. The second set of pills, Misoprostol, is taken 24 to 48 hours after the Mifepristone. It is highly important for your health and safety to go back to the doctor approximately two weeks after to verify all the contents of the pregnancy have been expelled from your uterus. Retention of tissue can cause severe infections and can potentially be fatal. Mifepristone and Misoprostol should ONLY be taken under the instruction and supervision of a licensed doctor.

How does the abortion pill work?

The Mifepristone terminates the pregnancy by blocking the absorption of progesterone, causing the uterine lining to begin breaking down and the cervix to loosen. Misoprostol causes contractions, leading the uterus to discharge the fetus and all the life-sustaining tissue and products of the pregnancy. If you have already taken the first pill set, Mifepristone, and are having second thoughts about terminating your pregnancy, there is an abortion pill reversal process available. If this process is acted upon within 72 hours taking Mifepristone, before taking the Misoprostol, the reversal has about a 70% success rate.

At what week of pregnancy do I still qualify to take the abortion pill?

Mifepristone and Misoprostol can only be taken up to the first 10 weeks after your last menstrual period. The abortion pill may be taken up to 70 days or a little over 2 months after the first day of your last period.

Here we are! Just like that, it’s already June, and what a strange 2020 we have experienced thus far. The first part of 2020 has felt like an entire year in itself! COVID-19 has brought us many challenges. But challenges can bring positive change. Check out our SAFE Post-Quarantine Activities below.

As COVID-19 has left us with uncertainty and questions about what is next, there are a lot of great things that have, and can come, out of this. Here are some tips to chase away the COVID blues.

These quarantine activities assume measures are taken to follow all CDC guidelines and social distancing when in public.

  1. Go outside! Get some sun! Have a picnic or take a walk around the park! It’s amazing what this can do for your mental health and wellness. Not to mention, being in the sun allows your body to get the Vitamin D it desperately needs to keep you healthy! If there is one thing, we have learned from all of this, it’s that you have to take care of yourself.
  2. Brighten up your home! We often overlook the impact that small features play in our everyday lives. Pro tip: freshen up your home with fresh flowers!
  3. Laugh often! Watch a funny movie or your favorite YouTube videos. Laughter is proven to relieve physical tension and stress.
  4. Swap your favorite smoothie recipe with your friends! Here is our favorite (and healthy!) smoothie recipe. Pro tip: it’s easy to hide spinach in your smoothies! It makes for a healthy, nutritious drink and you can’t even taste the spinach!

RECIPE: Fruit/Spinach Smoothie (Makes for a great breakfast!)

1 cup spinach

½ avocado

½ cut up apple

¼ cup blueberries

1 banana

2 cups of coconut water

2 tsp 100% cocoa powder

Put all the above contents in the blender, and blend! If the consistency is too thick, just add more regular water. If it’s too watery, feel free to add in some Greek yogurt until it’s the consistency that you prefer!
