Do you know if you are at risk for having an STI/STD? If you are sexually active, or perhaps you have been with the same partner for a while now, we strongly recommend that you get tested. Why? Because according to the Center of Disease Control (CDC), one in every five persons at any given time have a Sexually Transmitted Disease/Infection (STD/I). Almost 50% of those who have an STI are between 15-24 years old. Our medical staff can talk with you to help you determine if you are at risk.

What type of STI/STD is the most common?

According to the World Health Organization, chlamydia and gonorrhea are some of the more common STIs and they are both treatable.

What are some common symptoms of chlamydia and gonorrhea?

Because STIs/STDs don’t always cause symptoms, they may go unnoticed until complications occur. The symptoms can be similar for both chlamydia and gonorrhea:

  • burning when you pee
  • abnormal, discolored discharge from the vagina
  • abnormal discharge from the rectum
  • pain in the rectum
  • bleeding from the rectum

With gonorrhea, you may also notice rectal symptoms like itching, soreness, and pain when you defecate.

If a woman has a more severe case of chlamydia, and the infection moves upward to the uterus and fallopian tubes, this can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID symptoms can cause:

  • fever
  • feeling sick
  • vaginal bleeding, even if you do not have a period
  • intense pain in your pelvic area

Seek emergency medical help if you think you may have PID.

When should I get tested and treated?

The earlier an STI/STD is detected, the better it is for your health. The longer the infection goes untreated, the more problems can ensue.
