The abortion pill (RU-486) is an artificial steroid that blocks progesterone, a hormone needed to continue a pregnancy, before it is released. Mifepristone is the generic name. The brand names are Mifeprex or Early Option.
When Is The Pill Used?
March 2016, the FDA approved RU486 for usage within 10 weeks (70 days) after the first day of last menstrual period.
How does the abortion pill work?
The abortion pill is actually two different pills to be taken 24-48 hours apart. The Mifepristone terminates the pregnancy by blocking the absorption of progesterone, causing the uterine lining to begin breaking down and the cervix to loosen. Misoprostol causes contractions, leading the uterus to discharge the fetus and all the life-sustaining tissue and products of the pregnancy.

If this process is acted upon within 72 hours taking Mifepristone, before taking the Misoprostol, the reversal has about a 70% success rate. What are the side effects of the abortion pill?
