Understanding Your Situation: First Steps for Pregnant Teens

If you think you might be pregnant, it’s completely normal to feel anxious, confused, or even scared. These feelings are completely valid. The most important first step is finding out for sure that you’re actually pregnant with a reliable pregnancy test.

Many teens worry about cost or privacy. That’s exactly why Mid Cities Women's Clinic provides free, confidential services. You deserve access to accurate information and caring support, regardless of your financial situation or personal circumstances.

How Do You Know for Sure?

To confirm a pregnancy, the first thing you need to do is take a pregnancy test and receive an ultrasound. An ultrasound helps to determine how far along you are and provides important information about your next steps.

But what if you can’t afford a pregnancy test right now? What if you want to keep this as private as possible while you sort through your thoughts? Mid Cities Women's Clinic provides free pregnancy tests and free ultrasounds in a compassionate, confidential, and judgment-free environment. These essential teen pregnancy resources are available to you without judgment or pressure.

You’re welcome to bring a parent, trusted friend, or loved one to your appointment, or you can come on your own—whatever makes you feel most comfortable and supported. Our priority is to give you a safe space to get the answers you need.

Complete Confidentiality

All of our resources are 100% confidential. We will never share your testing results, pregnancy status, or decisions with anyone—not your parents, not your school, not anyone—without your explicit permission. Your privacy is protected, and your trust matters to us.

Know Your Legal Rights as a Pregnant Teen

It’s important to know your legal rights when you’re looking for help during a possible pregnancy. Laws regarding parental consent and notification vary significantly by state, which can affect your options and the decisions available to you.

Do You Need a Parent’s Permission to Get an Abortion?

Abortion is currently banned in Texas, except to preserve the life of the pregnant woman. This will not affect care for miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. A woman who seeks or obtains an abortion will not be held criminally or civilly liable under Texas law.[1][2]

If you’re thinking about traveling to another state for an abortion, be aware that the surrounding areas may have parental consent requirements for abortion.

You may feel that your parents deserve to know that you’re pregnant, and may want their help and support as you navigate the decision-making process. If you feel safe doing so, you may want to tell them once you’ve confirmed your pregnancy at Mid Cities Women's Clinic. Our team can help you prepare for this conversation.

Figuring Out Your Options: Teen Pregnancy Help

One of the most valuable teen pregnancy resources you can access is comprehensive options counseling. Understanding all three pregnancy options—abortion, adoption, and parenting—empowers you to make the decision that aligns with your values, circumstances, and future goals.

Mid Cities Women's Clinic provides judgment-free information about all your options. We’re here to answer your questions honestly, and help you explore what each choice could mean for your life and future.

How Do You Tell Your Parents You’re Pregnant?

Telling your parents can be really scary. It’s normal to feel nervous or unsure about how they’ll react. Here are some steps that can make it a little easier:

Consider Your Options First

You don’t need to decide right away, but having an idea of which option feels right for you can make the conversation easier.

Talk to Someone You Trust

If you’re nervous, practice with someone you feel safe with – an older sibling, aunt, school counselor, or mentor. They may be able to help you figure out what to say and support you through the conversation.

Choose the Right Time and Place

Pick a time when your parents aren’t rushed, stressed, or busy. A private spot at home usually works best, where you won’t be interrupted.

Be Clear and Honest

It’s okay to be direct. You might say something like: “I have something important to tell you. It’s not what I planned, but I’m pregnant.”

Prepare for Their Reaction

Your parents will probably have many questions and strong emotions. They may want to know how long you’ve been sexually active, how far along you are, who the father is, or what you plan to do. Even if their questions feel hard or judgmental, it usually comes from concern for you. Try to answer as honestly as you can, and share your thoughts about your options if you feel ready.

Important Safety Note

If you think your parents might react violently, do not tell them alone. Call for help first. If you are actively being abused, please contact the national domestic violence hotline at 800-799-7233 to get help. You deserve to be safe.
